Why You Travel More When You’re Single!

It’s quite a controversial topic but I do think that people travel more when they’re single than when they are in a relationship. From personal experience I can say this is definitely true, I’ve been pretty much single for nearly 7 years (a long time I know, apparently time flies when you’re having fun!!) and I’ve been travelling on-off for nearly 6 of those years where I’ve visited 33 Countries, lived abroad for 2 years and basically had the time of my life and when people ask me how I’ve managed to do this I do believe that the main reason is because I’ve been single!

Update: It’s nearly 2 years later and I’ve now visited nearly 50 Countries and I’ve been mostly single in those 2 years!

The main reason I think you travel more when you’re single is because when you’re single all you have to think about is well.. YOU!

It sounds simple but it’s so true. If you want to quit your job, book a ticket somewhere and see how far the money you’ve saved gets you then you can do it! You don’t have to worry about how much money the other person has saved, if they can’t leave their job or perhaps worse, don’t want to!

One passport is all you need!

It also means you can change your mind as much as you want, I have a huge case of itchy feet and a self-confessed habit of changing my mind and making new life plans all the time! Only a few months ago I left England to travel Asia and my plan was to then head to New Zealand on a working holiday visa but a month before I was due to go to New Zealand I decided I wanted to go home and live in London and I didn’t have to worry about crushing someone else dreams of going to New Zealand because I only had my altered dreams to think about.

I nearly went to New Zealand again and didn’t, which you can read about here if you wish – Calming the Addiction to Leave.

And just because you’re single it doesn’t mean you have to travel solo and alone (although I do recommend travelling solo for some time at least) because travelling with friends is so much fun! I travelled with 2 amazing friends in South East Asia recently and it felt like being on a girls holiday for 3 months.. how good is that! And from planning these trips or part of a trip with friends you create the motivation to travel with each other, to book the flights and not get stuck at home.

Where as if you’re in a relationship friends would assume if you travel it’ll be with your boyfriend/girlfriend and let’s be honest, no one wants to play the third wheel for too long so it’s likely you won’t get asked to go away with other people as much and then its just up to you two to motivate yourselves to book the flights and go.

If you don’t have friends that are available to travel with, go anyway and meet new friends whilst you’re away. In fact both girls mentioned above were friends I met in hostels in different parts of the world! If you’re not sure about hostels have a look at this post to help reassure yourself! Tip’s on Staying in Hostels if you’re an Introvert!

Travelling with friends is pretty amazing!

Finally travel is amazing but it isn’t always easy. It’s stressful, tiring, painful and you’ll be with whoever you travel with 24/7 which quite frankly isn’t normal. They say travel is the best way to test a relationship and I think that’s true but at what extent do you want to push this to?

I’ve met a lot of couples in the past few years who travel perfectly together, have the same dreams and just make you incredibly jealous because they seem so happy and they have someone to share their trip with, but I’ve also seen couples who have pretty much ruined their trip and their relationship by travelling together, maybe the reason people travel most when they’re single is because its easier and sometimes it’s not a bad thing to take the easy option!

That being said, being in a relationship doesn’t mean you can’t travel alone or with friends, a lot more people are choosing to leave their significant other at home if they can’t or don’t want to travel, and satisfying their Wanderlust on their own and this is great! It would be hard of course and you don’t want to spend your whole trip trying to get a good internet connection to message and Skype but it can work and I’ve met people who it has worked for!

There’s a lot of pressure these days from society to be in a relationship, especially in your mid-late 20’s and that if you’re not in one that you should be looking for one but eventually, when the time is right that person will come along and until then we should enjoy being single and reap its benefits.. especially the travel benefits because there’s a lot to see out there!

This is a great post. All I want in my 20s is to travel and it doesn’t seem to fit in a relationship. People constantly ask if I’m still single, and its horrible! But this makes me feel less alone in that, that there is like minded people out there! Great blog 🙂

    • Thank you and that sounds like the perfect plan to me! People do make travel and a relationship work but it is hard, I think you’re best exploring the world on your own first.
You’re definitely not alone lovely! X

  3. I totally agree with you on this one. Definitely easier to travel when you’re single. I can count on all the trips that I’ve never gotten to taken because the significant other failed to save or decided they didn’t want to go anymore. That’s why I love the power of being single. You can do and go where you want when you want! As well as meet awesome people on the road ha!

  4. Thank you for your comment! I’m glad you agree, I think it’s just easier to plan things when you only have to think about yourself and your own situation! 🙂
But yes a partner who wants to travel just as much would be ideal but for now we’ll have to just carry on on our own! 😀

Absolutely love this! I feel like this logic applies to a lot of things in life; I love making decisions knowing I don’t have to take anyone else’s thoughts into consideration! I’ve definitely been on some incredible trips while single and met some amazing people along the way!

    • I’m glad you like it Chloe!! Yes being selfish gets a bad rap but i think we need to have that time before getting into a relationship. I’m glad you’ve been on some amazing trips whilst single!
