This summer signifies 5 years of on/off travel and living abroad for me. When I look back it doesn’t seem like long ago that I was on my way to the USA to work at a summer camp at 20 years old but I’ve also done so much since then and changed so much that it feels like a lifetime ago.
The last 5 years have been an adventure that’s for sure, I’ve visited 23 countries, worked in the USA for 3 months and travelled for a month after, went on holiday to Vegas, lived in Australia for 2 years, fell in love with Melbourne, visited New Zealand, backpacked South East Asia for 5 months, backpacked South America for 3 months, visited Eastern Europe and that’s just the trips from the outside!
Bucketlist ticks include jumping off a bridge in Queenstown, watching the sunrise over Ayres Rock, seeing Great White Sharks while in a cage in the ocean of Southern Australia, sunbathing in paradise, visiting the Amazon Rainforest, seeing the Salt Flats in Boliva, getting a selfie with Christ The Redeemer, finally seeing the Eiffel Tower, partying at 2 Full Moon parties, watching the sunrise at Angkor Wat and so much more.
Lessons from Travel
I didn’t go to university and I’m so glad I didn’t (I would have done a course for the sake of it and finished in so much debt) instead I’ve worked temp office jobs- some good, some bad, earnt and spent my own money and learnt so much in this ‘university of life’ in the last 5 years.
Travel has taught me the value of money, the value of friendship, how big but how small the world is, it’s taught me to trust people, that there are far more good people out there than bad (no matter what you hear on the news), its taught me that I can stick out rubbish jobs in order to earn some money to travel with, its taught me to trust my instincts as they’re often right which in turn has taught me to trust myself, its taught me that change is good and exciting.
In the last 5 years, I’ve lived back at home 4 times. I’m lucky I’ve had a home to come back to with supportive parents so I can get myself back on my feet, earn some money and leave again, but at 25 years old I no longer want to rely on this, so in a months time I’m back on the road with no return planned (except for a holiday) and I’m very excited!!
I’ve definitely learnt not to over plan as plans never work out but I like to have an idea of what I want to do in my future as this is my motivation.
Plans for the next 5 years
So in the next 5 years I hope to:
- Visit up to 50 countries (I’m currently on 28)!!
- Work and live in New Zealand for 1-2 years
- Travel more of Asia
- Go back to Australia
- Backpack Central America
- Travel around India
- Go home for a Christmas
- See more of Europe
- Teach English in China
- Get my work visa for Canada and live there for a few years- In fact, in 5 years time, I hope to be in Canada writing a 10 years of travel post.
Here’s to the next 5 years of travel and to the second half of my 20’s!
