If you’re planning 3 days in Istanbul, this itinerary will help you see the city’s most iconic sights while still experiencing local neighbourhoods and culture.
3 days is the perfect amount of time in Istanbul and exactly how long my first trip was. I’ve since been back to Istanbul many times and even lived there for a few months so let me give you the ideal itinerary for 3 days in Istanbul!
How to Spend 3 Days in Istanbul
Based on all of my local Istanbul travel experience, here’s a guided 3 day Istanbul itinerary to make the most of your trip, you see the top attractions and neighbourhoods, and have some of the best food, and you do it in a clever way, because Istanbul is huge and you want to see a section of the city each day rather than going back and forth all over the city everyday!
1 Day in Istanbul – Sultanahmet Tourist Attractions
Step into the pages of history as you explore Sultanahmet, Istanbul’s treasure trove of ancient wonders and captivating tales.
Galata Bridge
Once arriving in Istanbul / on the first day of your trip, I recommend heading straight to the Sultanahmet side of the city because this is where all of the main Istanbul tourist attractions are and it’s a good way to spend your first day seeing all of the sites. Starting at the Galata Bridge is a great idea, you can walk over it and see the fishermen from the top or walk underneath it with all the fish restaurants.
From the Galata bridge, you can see amazing views over both sides of Istanbul with all the mosque minarets popping up out of the top and its a great way to start your 3 days in Istanbul.

Blue Mosque
There are many attractions and activities in Istanbul. I started off visiting the Blue Mosque which isn’t as blue inside as you may think but it is very beautiful and best of all it’s FREE to enter and welcoming to all people, Muslim or not. This is a great way to see inside a mosque if you haven’t been in one before. Just be sure to bring a light scarf with you as a women to cover your shoulders and hair as you go in and wear something that goes down to your knees.
On that note, here is my guide on how to dress in Istanbul as a woman to feel comfortable and practical as you explore.

Hagia Sophia
You can’t miss the Hagia Sophia whilst in this side of Sultanahmet, quite literally and you should head inside because a visit to Hagia Sophia is an unforgettable highlight of any trip to Istanbul.
Once a Byzantine basilica, later an Ottoman mosque, and now again a functioning mosque, it captures over 1,500 years of layered history. As you step inside, the immense dome, golden mosaics, and graceful calligraphy reveal how empires and faiths have shaped this monumental space. Arrive early to avoid long lines, dress modestly as it’s an active place of worship.
I’ll warn you now that you do have to be careful around here. A lot of men will be selling themselves as a tour guide, which is fine if you want one but it can get annoying if you don’t so be firm in your response if you don’t want one.

Basilica Cistern
My next stop exploring Sultanahmet with 3 days in Istanbul was Basilica Cistern, which I recommend, especially if you’ve read Dan Browns book Inferno. This attraction takes some finding as its only a small building on the street level where the tickets are sold and then it all goes underground!
This is a huge area used to hold water for the city built in AD 532, and from the outset, it sounds quite boring but along with reading Inferno and the ery-ness down there it was quite an interesting place to visit.

Grand Bazaar and Spice Market
After these top tourist attractions, you are very close to the Grand Bazaar and Spice Market so they are a good place to visit next and to keep your Istanbul sightseeing together with just 3 days in Istanbul!
Both markets are a fun place to visit although the men working in there can get a bit annoying as they are very salesy and I had a few inappropriate comments as a solo female in Istanbul.

Other attractions you can visit in the Sultanahmet area of Istanbul on this day are Topkapi Palace and Suleymaniye Mosque! Although Topkapi Palace does require a few hours because it’s such a big space. If you are tight on time, I recommend visiting the above places instead because you can see more in the same amount of time instead of just one attraction.
2 Days in Istanbul – Galata & Bosphorus
I recommend spending day 2 in Istanbul in and around Galata. This will give you a mix of touristy sights but also give an insight into the more local side of Istanbul and keep you away from all the salesman you see in Sultanahmet!
Turkish Breakfast at Cafe Privato Restaurant
A Turkish Breakfast is a must when in Istanbul. You get served so many small dishes and its a great way to try such a range of fresh foods.
Please please do not get a Turkish Breakfast in Sultanahmet because you’ll get ripped off as it’s the main touristy part of the city! Instead go to Cafe Privato Restaurant in Galata, this is one of my favourite spots and although tourists go, it’s also a top local spot! There are also many other cafes in Istanbul I recommend that are in Galata and will give you a local feel to the city.

Galata Tower
For an epic view of Istanbul, you can head up the Galata Tower which you can see from the breakfast place I recommend above.
Cihangir
After exploring some of Galata and seeing views over the city, if you wish to keep wandering and see a more local and hip side of the city, walk towards Cihangir. This is where I lived in Istanbul and it’s full of cool cafes and great food. I really recommend Kahve 6 for lunch on your 3 day Istanbul itinerary.
Bosphorus Boat Trip
Come afternoon or early evening, give your feet a break and head down to the river to jump on a Bosphorus boat trip. Sunset is a great time to do this depending on the time of year you are there. In summer, the sunset is late in Istanbul!
Tickets can be purchased by the Galata Bridge, or you can book a trip like this in advance, for more choice I would book in advance, especially if you want evening entertainment on your Bosphorus boat tour and have a dinner cruise like this.
3 Days in Istanbul – Asian Side of Istanbul
End your 3 days in Istanbul across the water on the Asian side of the city to really make you feel like you’ve seen the city well!
There are 2 areas on the Asian side you can see! Kadikoy and Uskudar.
Kadikoy
Kadıköy, on the Asian side of Istanbul, offers a relaxed and authentic contrast to the city’s historic European quarter. Easily reached by ferry from Eminönü, Karaköy, or Beşiktaş in about 20 minutes, it’s also accessible via the Marmaray metro or M4 metro line. The ferry ride itself is worth the trip alone!
As soon as you dock at Kadıköy Pier, the energy shifts to something more local and laid-back, with bustling cafés, bookshops, and street musicians welcoming you ashore.
Once there, wander through Kadıköy Market (Çarşı), where fishmongers, spice stalls, and meze shops create a feast for the senses. Moda, just a short walk away, is perfect for coffee hopping and sunset strolls along the seaside promenade and really gives you a ‘holiday’ feel. Art lovers can explore Yeldeğirmeni’s colorful murals and independent galleries, while food lovers can graze on street delights like stuffed mussels and lahmacun.

Üsküdar
There’s also Üsküdar. I have a full blog post with a list of things to do in Üsküdar. This is one of Istanbul’s oldest district and you can reach it easily by ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy in about 10 minutes, or via the Marmaray line that connects both continents underground. Stepping off the ferry, you’re greeted by a sweep of minarets, seagulls, and the gentle rhythm of local life along the waterfront. It’s an area where history still breathes through the architecture, from its centuries-old mosques to Ottoman-era fountains scattered through winding streets.
Spend the day exploring iconic landmarks like the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, Yeni Valide Mosque, and the scenic Çamlıca Hill, where panoramic views stretch across the Bosphorus to the European skyline. Stop by the local teahouses for Turkish tea with a sea breeze, visit small bazaars for authentic gifts, and enjoy traditional home-style dishes at family-run lokantas. Üsküdar blends serenity, spirituality, and daily life in a way that reveals Istanbul’s soul beyond the tourist trail.

Turkish Hamam
Whether you fit in this to end your 3 day Istanbul itinerary or fit it into day 1 or day 2, I do recommend you go for a Turkish Hammam whilst in Istanbul because its an experience!
I visited Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamam which is one of the most popular Hamam’s in Istanbul. They have women’s and mens times separately because you get scrubbed down with basically nothing on! Make sure you read up on what to expect from a Hamam so you know beforehand and be prepared to be squeaky clean afterwards!
This is a great way to relax after a trip exploring and on your feet!
To end your 3 days in Istanbul in a mildly relaxing manner, I suggest visiting a Turkish Bath or Hammam as they are known which is an experience, to say the least.

I hope this 3 day Istanbul itinerary helps you out
