If you are looking for the best Christmas light trails Manchester has to offer this winter, you are in the right place. I have rounded up 15 illuminated trails in and around the city for 2026.
When people talk about the Manchester Christmas lights, they usually mean the markets and the city centre streets, and they are lovely. But if you want the real wow moment, the light trails are where it is at! These are much more fun to visit, family friendly and offer a full evening out. Think glowing woodland, projections on stately homes and tunnels of twinkling lights, all within easy reach of the city and surrounding area. So if you are searching for Christmas lights in Manchester that are worth heading out for, these are the ones I would put on your list.
A few of these are right on the doorstep in Trafford, Salford, Wigan and north Manchester, but most are within a 30 to 60 minute drive in Cheshire, Warrington and Merseyside. I have grouped them by area so you can find the one closest to you, and there is a free option or two in there too!
All details were correct for the 2026 season at the time of writing. Light trails can change slots and prices as they sell out, and bad weather can close a night at short notice, so always check the official website before you set off.
Quick tips for visiting Christmas light trails near Manchester
- Book midweek in November if you can. Almost every trail on this list runs peak and off peak pricing, and a Tuesday in late November can be a third cheaper than a Saturday in mid December. The December weekends are also the first slots to sell out.
- Check whether parking needs booking. Dunham Massey, Heaton Park, Magical Woodland and Knowsley Safari all want you to add parking when you buy your tickets, and turning up without it can cost you more (or a long walk).
- Pick the right slot for little ones. The earliest entry times (usually from around 4pm) are your friend with toddlers. You get the full dark effect without a midnight bedtime and a meltdown in the car park. This is what time I’ll be going with my little one.
- Dress for a long walk in the cold. Most trails are around a mile and fully outdoors, so hats, gloves, a flask and proper footwear make all the difference. Wellies are a good shout for the woodland ones.
- Look out for quiet sessions. Lots of trails now run calmer evenings with fewer visitors and lower sound, which is great for SEN families or anyone who finds the busy nights a bit much. I have flagged these under each trail.
Christmas light trails in Greater Manchester
These four are the closest options for seeing Christmas lights in Manchester.
1. Christmas at Dunham Massey, Altrincham
If there is one light trail the whole of the North West seems to book, it is this one, and 2026 is a big year as Christmas at Dunham Massey celebrates its 10th anniversary. The National Trust estate is transformed after dark with a mile long trail through the gardens and park, brand new installations for this year and colourful projections across the front of the historic house. This is the lights trail in Manchester I’ll be heading to first this year!
Father Christmas pops up along the route, and there are food and drink stalls plus a festive fairground at the end (both cost extra). It is also one of the few big trails that is dog friendly on most nights, so the whole family really can come. Allow around 1 to 2 hours.
Good to know: quiet access sessions run at 4pm and 4.15pm on selected dates.
Where: Woodhouse Lane, Altrincham WA14 4SJ
When: 20 November 2026 to 2 January 2027

Booking: Required, via Christmas at Dunham Massey. Book parking at the same time as your tickets.
2. Northern Lights, Heaton Park
Northern Lights comes from the team behind Kendal Calling and Bluedot, and you can tell. It feels like a festival as much as a light trail, with a Christmas village, street food, drinks and fairground rides waiting at the end of the route.
The theme for 2026 is A Christmas Time Machine, taking you back through the decades of festive nostalgia across roughly 14 illuminated zones. The trail is just over a mile, winding through woodland and around the boating lake. A big plus for city dwellers is that you can leave the car at home and save on the parking charge. Heaton Park Metrolink stop is about a 10 minute walk away (use Gate 13 opposite the tram stop).
Good to know: neurodivergent evenings with fewer visitors and lower sound levels run on 2 and 9 December.
Where: Heaton Park, Sheepfoot Lane, Manchester M25 0DL
When: 19 November to 31 December 2026
Cost: Early bird adults from around £17 and children from £12, plus a £1.75 booking fee. Parking £7.50 per car, booked in advance
Booking: Required, via Northern Lights Manchester. Tickets come with a free flexible booking guarantee, so you can change your slot up to 24 hours before.
3. RHS Glow, RHS Garden Bridgewater, Worsley
RHS Glow is quietly one of the best value light trails near Manchester, and the gardens at Bridgewater look completely different lit up after dark. For 2026 there is a completely new route with interactive and immersive installations, so it is worth going back even if you did it last year.
We went the other year when my baby was just a few months old. It was great for taking a young baby or very young children to, or no children at all because it is a calmer and less OTT than others, although still very impressive. I will say my older stepsons found it a bit boring because the year before we went to Lanterns & Lights at Chester Zoo which is really cool! A plus is that parking is free, which helps keep the total cost down.
Where: Occupation Road, off Leigh Road, Worsley, Salford M28 2LJ
When: Selected dates from 26 November to 30 December 2026, with slots from around 4.15pm
Cost: Non members adults from £9.25 and children from £5.50; RHS members adults from £6 and children from £4; under 5s free. Super off peak evenings are the cheapest
Booking: Required, via RHS Garden Bridgewater. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters can be borrowed but need booking ahead.

4. Light Night Wigan, Mesnes Park (FREE)
Want a light trail that costs absolutely nothing? Light Night Wigan is a free outdoor festival of light art spread across Mesnes Park and Wigan town centre, now in its sixth year. Local, national and international artists take over the space with installations that are a bit more arty and surprising than your usual reindeer and tunnels.
There is no booking and no ticket, you simply turn up and wander. The catch is that it only runs for three nights, so get it in the diary now, and it makes a lovely kick off to the festive season before the paid trails open.
Where: Mesnes Park and Wigan town centre
When: 20 to 22 November 2026, 5pm to 9pm
Cost: Free
Booking: Not needed. Details at Light Night Wigan
Christmas light trails near Manchester: Cheshire and Warrington
Head south or west for 20 to 45 minutes and you will find some of the most magical Christmas light trails near Manchester, from folklore festivals in stately gardens to lantern animals at the zoo and a Disney trail.
5. Yuletide, Tatton Park, Knutsford
Yuletide is the one to pick if your family has “done” the classic light trails and fancies something different. Run by Cheshire arts charity Wild Rumpus, it is part light trail, part winter festival, with acrobats, live music, storytelling, puppets and fire all woven through the brilliant Tatton Park Gardens.
The theme digs into winter folklore and slightly ridiculous festive rituals, so there is plenty for curious kids to get stuck into. It returns in 2026 with a newly imagined layout, and the smaller scale makes it a nice choice for younger children who might be overwhelmed by the huge trails.
Where: Tatton Park, Knutsford WA16 6QN
When: 14 November to 23 December 2026
Cost: Adults £19.50, children £11.50, 2 and under free
Booking: Required, via Yuletide
6. Enchanted Winter Walk, Quarry Bank, Styal
Not every evening out needs to be a two hour epic. Quarry Bank’s Enchanted Winter Walk is a short, sweet and affordable wander of around 30 minutes through the illuminated Upper Garden, which makes it perfect for toddlers or a quick festive fix after school and the ticket price reflects this too,
The ticket is lower than many Christmas light trails in Manchester on this list and it includes more than you would expect: adults get a festive hot drink, while children get reindeer food and a child sized hot drink. Parking is free and dogs on leads are welcome. Note that National Trust members still need to buy a ticket.
Good to know: quiet sessions with reduced lighting, no music and fewer visitors run on 12 and 29 December.
Where: Quarry Bank, Styal, Wilmslow SK9 4HP
When: 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 to 23 and 28 to 31 December 2026

7. The Magic Lamp in the Hidden Garden, Bents, Glazebury
Bents Garden & Home has gone full storybook this year with The Magic Lamp in the Hidden Garden, an after dark adventure built around theatrical light installations, immersive soundscapes and little storytelling touches tucked around each corner.
What makes Bents a winner for families is everything around the trail. There is a Winter Food Market for festive bites, an outdoor Christmas teepee to warm up in with a hot drink, and of course the garden centre’s famous Christmas displays to wander before your slot. Just note the food and teepee extras are scaled back on Sundays.
Where: Warrington Road, Glazebury WA3 5NT

If your kids are obsessed with dinosaurs, look no further. Land of Lights fills Gulliver’s World with giant glowing lanterns, from roaring dinosaurs to famous monuments and fantasy dreamworlds, and this year promises to be bigger and brighter than the last three.
It also has the longest season on this list, opening before Halloween and running right through January so you have lots of time to plan it in and go. There are dog friendly nights, free parking and the option to add on a visit to Santa’s grotto. Just note that tickets do not include access to the theme park.

Cost: From £20, with early bird prices available now
Booking: Required, via Land of Lights Warrington
9. The Nightmare Before Christmas Light Trail, Arley Hall
This is the brand new trail for 2026 that everyone is talking about. Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Light Trail has landed at Arley Hall & Gardens, bringing Jack Skellington, Sally and Zero to life with light sculptures, 3D scenes and the songs from the film. One of the great things about this Christmas light trail near Manchester is that it’s open from October so you can get into the spirit early!
It is a little spookier than your average Christmas trail (you start in Halloween Town, after all), so it is best for older kids, teens and adults who love the film. It is also the priciest trail on the list, but the scale and production are on another level. Allow around 75 minutes.
Where: Arley Hall & Gardens, Arley, Northwich CW9 6NA
When: 22 October 2026 to 3 January 2027
Cost: Ages 14+ from £32, reduced tickets from £24, family bundles from £27.20 per person, 3 and under free. Parking £8 per car

10. Magical Woodland, Blakemere Village, Northwich
Magical Woodland is less of a walk and more of a festive show in the trees. Across 15 acres of woodland you will bump into Santa, Mrs Claus, elves the Grinch, and real reindeer and owls.
There are plenty of photo spots, marshmallow toasting and a festive food court, so allow a good couple of hours. The paths can get muddy and steep after rain, so leave the small wheeled pushchair at home, and note the site is not wheelchair accessible and dogs are not allowed.
Where: Blakemere Village, Sandiway, Northwich CW8 2EB
When: Late November to 24 December 2026 (check the booking calendar for exact dates)
Cost: From £17.50 per person. Parking £5 per car booked in advance, or £15 on the night
Booking: Required, via Magical Woodland
Worth the drive: more light trails in the North West
These Christmas light trails near Manchester sit a little further out, roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes from the city, but each one has something the closer trails do not, whether that is lions, a pantomime or a free festive night at the seaside so they are worth the drive and will provide a full evening out!
11. Lanterns & Light, Chester Zoo
Where else can you see a glowing elephant herd and a lantern lion pride on the same night out? Lanterns & Light turns Chester Zoo into an illuminated safari, and for 2026 it has a new route with even more interactive animal puppets.
Expect glowing tunnels, fire gardens, festive food markets and fairground rides, with Father Christmas making an appearance along the way. It opens earlier than most (mid November) and runs into the new year, so there is plenty of choice of dates. Parking is free and zoo members get discounted tickets.
We went to Lanterns & Lights a few years ago with the kids and we all loved it. The staff were brilliant and so engaging with their light up animals and how they make the animal lantern and lights dance and move is really impressive. You won’t be disappointed with this one.
Good to know: quiet hour sessions run at 4pm on 20, 21 and 26 November and 3 December.
Where: Chester Zoo, Upton by Chester CH2 1EU
When: 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, 4.30pm to 8pm
Cost: Children from £12 and adults from around £19.50, depending on the date
Booking: Required, via Chester Zoo

12. BeWILDerwood Presents Christmas, Whitchurch
BeWILDerwood is made for families with children aged 10 and under. BeWILDerwood is magical all year round but in December the woods become a snowy Christmas world with a twinkling light trail full of snowmen, appearances from the much loved BeWILDerwood characters and a cheerful mini pantomime that gets everyone joining in.
The whole experience takes about 1.5 hours, and keep your eyes peeled for Father Christmas on the trail. One thing to know before you go: the usual climbing frames and play structures are closed during the Christmas event, so do not promise the kids a play session! But be sure to go back another time to go on them. Parking is free which is great!
Where: Bickley Moss, Whitchurch SY13 4JF (on the Cheshire and Shropshire border)
When: Selected dates from 28 November to 23 December 2026
Cost: £19.50 for everyone aged 2 and over, under 2s free, eligible carers free
Booking: Required, via BeWILDerwood Cheshire
13. Enchanted at Knowsley Safari, Prescot
Knowsley’s Enchanted is one of the cheapest big light trails you will find in the North West this year, with tickets starting under £10 and toddlers at just £3. The 2026 trail has been extended through the Foot Safari, with glowing animal installations, sparkling woodland scenes and fire pits for warming your hands.
There are rides and a Santa’s grotto if you want to add extras (these cost more), and festive food and drink to keep everyone going. Allow about an hour for the trail itself. Parking is free, but add the free parking ticket when you book to save a space.
Good to know: book by 1 November and marshmallow toasting is included free with every ticket.
Where: Knowsley Safari, Prescot L34 4AN
When: Selected dates from 20 November to 23 December 2026. Arrive from 4pm, last trail entry 7.30pm

14. Santa’s Secret Forest, Liverpool
Santa’s Secret Forest is a good shout if you want to combine a light trail with a proper Santa visit in one trip. The woodland light trail itself is short at around half a kilometre (about 30 minutes), but you also get real reindeer and the Merrywood Market with festive food and marshmallow toasting.
Go for the Full Access ticket and you add the immersive Christmas Hub, a visit with Santa and a soft toy for each child, which turns it into a 2 to 2.5 hour outing. There is even an optional 4D VR sleigh ride. Wellies are recommended as the woodland paths get muddy.
Good to know: SEN sessions run from 2.30pm on selected dates.
Where: Orrell Hill Lane, Liverpool L38 5DA
When: 21 November to 24 December 2026
Cost: Light Trail Only from £18.15; Full Access with Santa from £50.05
Booking: Required, via Santa’s Secret Forest
15. Blackpool Illuminations (FREE)
The original light show! Blackpool Illuminations are completely free and from 2nd November the seafront switches to Christmas by the Sea, a smaller festive display that keeps parts of the Promenade lit until early January.
You can see them however suits your family: walk a stretch of the promenade, drive the length of them from the warmth of the car, or hop on a tram for the full tour. With a festive day out at the seaside and a bag of chips on the way home, it is a fun and budget friendly alternative to the paid trails.

Christmas Light Trails Manchester FAQs
Where are the best Christmas lights in Manchester in 2026?
For the biggest displays, head to Christmas at Dunham Massey in Altrincham (celebrating its 10th year) or Northern Lights at Heaton Park, which you can reach by tram. RHS Glow at Bridgewater in Worsley is the best value of the Manchester Christmas lights, and Light Night Wigan is completely free for three nights in November. Near Manchester, I really recommend Lanterns & Lights at Chester Zoo for a unique lights display.

The early birds are The Nightmare Before Christmas Light Trail at Arley Hall (from 22 October) and Land of Lights in Warrington (from 24 October). Quarry Bank is the late one, waiting until 4 December.
Are there any free Christmas light trails in Manchester?
Yes. Light Night Wigan is free and runs for three nights from 20 to 22 November, and the Blackpool IlluminationsChristmas by the Sea display is free to walk, drive or tram past until 3 January. If you were hoping for Lightwaves at Salford Quays, it is taking a break this year while organisers work on a new Waves programme planned for 2027.

Shorter trails are your best bet with little legs. Quarry Bank’s Enchanted Winter Walk takes around 30 minutes, Santa’s Secret Forest’s trail is about half a kilometre, and Yuletide at Tatton is smaller in scale than the big estate trails. BeWILDerwood is also brilliant for under 10s thanks to the mini pantomime.

Christmas at Dunham Massey welcomes dogs on leads on most nights (except 27 November and 1, 7 and 30 December), Quarry Bank allows dogs on leads, and Land of Lights in Warrington runs special dog friendly nights. Magical Woodland, BeWILDerwood and Santa’s Secret Forest do not allow dogs, apart from assistance dogs.
