June is one of the very best months to explore Europe. The days are long, the weather is warm, and the summer crowds haven’t fully arrived yet — meaning you can enjoy stunning coastlines, historic cities, and scenic countryside before peak season begins.

From the sun-soaked islands of Greece to the wild beauty of Scotland’s highlands, there are so many incredible places to visit. In this guide, I share the best places to go in June in Europe, including where to find sunshine, local festivals, and quieter travel experiences.

Best Places to Visit in June, Europe Edition

Why is June the perfect month for a Europe trip?? – Most of Europe’s summer school holidays haven’t started yet in June and because of this, prices are lower than July and August to travel Europe and popular holiday destinations are far less busy. Europe is also heating up with many coastal destinations having beautiful beach and suntanning weather without it being too hot. Plus, mountainous areas have opened up after winter and are warm enough to hike without the summer humidity.

So let’s explore the best countries to visit in June in Europe, starting with Italy which is a pure winner for June travel!

1. Dolomites, Italy

If you’re wondering where to go in Europe in June, the Dolomites in northern Italy deserve a serious look. Late June hits a sweet spot — you get summer-quality conditions and stunning wildflower displays without the peak-season crowds.

Hiking areas like Alpe di Siusi and Val Gardena offer wide meadows, well-marked paths, and cable car access and June is statistically one of the driest months in the Dolomites, which is always a bonus when travelling with kids.

The Dolomites are also a brilliant Europe road trip idea for June, sitting within easy reach of Venice and the Austrian border. Top spots to visit in the Dolomites in June include Alpe di Siusi, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Lago di Braies, and the Val di Funes.

2. Lake Garda, Italy

We visited Lake Garda in early June the other year which was the end of the kids May school holiday and it was a great time to go! Everything was opening up and we had mid 20’s weather but it wasn’t too hot giving it some of best weather in Europe in June, and it wasn’t too busy!

We found that there were plenty of things to do for kids in Lake Garda including a fun waterpark which had zero queues when we went in June but I can imagine gets very busy in the summer holidays.

Lake Garda is only an hour from Milan’s airports making it one of the cheapest airports to fly into then you can hire a car or catch the train to the Lake and enjoy it!

3. Kotor, Montenegro

Kotor in Montenegro is one of those best European destinations in June that genuinely stops you in your tracks and June is the sweet spot of the year to visit, you get 15 hours of daylight and warm 28°C days without the scorching heat of late summer!

Sunshine is virtually guaranteed so it’s a great time to hit the beach before it gets too crowded,. The snow finally clears in the mountains, opening up more hiking trails and there’s far less pressure on facilities than in peak season, making it ideal for families who want the full Mediterranean experience without the July and August chaos.

It remains one of the most underrated summer holiday destinations in Europe, with stunning medieval old town walls, dramatic bay scenery, and prices that feel refreshingly reasonable compared to the rest of the Mediterranean.

4. Albanian Rivera

Talking of underrated destinations to visit in Europe in June, if Albania is on your radar, now is the time to go! Coastal areas bask under strong sunshine, rainfall is minimal, seas are warm, and the days stretch long into balmy evenings.

Since most tourists visit in July and August, you’ll find only moderately busy beaches in June — making for a much more relaxed experience along the Riviera. It’s also one of the most compelling cheap places to visit in Europe in June (for now!), think stunning Ionian coastline and crystal-clear water at a fraction of the cost of nearby Greece or Croatia.

When visiting Albania in June head to places beyond the main towns like Himara which strikes the perfect balance between having enough infrastructure to support visitors while retaining traditional Albanian charm and casual coastal vibes and Dhërmi is known for its beautiful beaches and nearby mountain villages.

5. Northern Albania

For places to go in Europe in June that feel genuinely off the beaten path, Northern Albania is hard to beat. The Accursed Mountains — also known as the Albanian Alps — are one of Europe’s last great wildernesses, and after visiting in May the other year, I can say that June is one of the best months to visit!

Much of the nature here is unspoilt and quiet, unlike popular hiking areas elsewhere in Europe and by late June the peaks and higher altitude zones lose their snow and become accessible, with cooler temperatures and slightly smaller crowds than the peak summer months.

Start your North Albanian trip visiting Shkodër and Shkodër Lake. We actually flew into Montenegro and drove down to Albania, before heading into the mountains to lesser visited but still popular places like the mountain village of Theth which locals love in the summer for it’s cool breeze and a popular thing to do is to take the Koman Lake ferry, into the Valbona Valley and the ‘Thailand of Albania’

6. Provence, France

One of the most iconic and best places to go in June in Europe is Provence in southern France because of the lavender blooms! The lavender flowering season generally runs from mid-June to mid-July, and by the end of June pretty much all the lavender fields in the Luberon will be in flower.

The best places to head are the Valensole Plateau — during peak bloom in late June and early July, the fields transform into a breathtaking sea of vibrant purple, with perfectly aligned rows creating stunning geometric patterns. And the hilltop village of Gordes, near the famous Abbey de Sénanque, where lavender frames one of the most photographed scenes in all of France!

For a quieter experience, the Drôme region borders northern Provence and is one of the most underrated places to see lavender, with villages like Grignan and Nyons offering scenic routes through wild fields without the tour buses or heavy foot traffic.

7. Balearic Islands, Spain

Spain is really the winner when it comes to the best country to visit in June because so much of the country is hot with gorgeous weather but not too hot and busy as the coming summer months.

However, the Balearic Islands really shine in June. The weather is perfect for soaking up Mediterranean sunshine, with an average temperature of 28°C, very little rainfall, and up to 14 hours of warm sunshine per day making it great for outdoor activities like hiking or beach-hopping before the peak-season rush drives prices up and beaches fill to capacity.

Each island has its own character, which makes them ideal for a June Europe itinerary with island-hopping potential. Mallorca is the largest, with dramatic Serra de Tramuntana mountains, gorgeous hidden coves, and the beautiful old city of Palma. Menorca, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is less crowded than its neighbours and ideal for nature lovers, with highlights including the postcard-perfect Macarelleta Cove and a 135km circular coastal track to walk or cycle and Formentera, the smallest island, is famed for its Caribbean-like turquoise waters, while Ibiza offers far more than its party reputation — its UNESCO-listed old town and quieter northern beaches are worth the trip alone!

8. Istanbul, Türkiye

For the ultimate European city break in June, Istanbul is a great option! A city straddling two continents right on the water, dripping in history, and blessed with excellent, hot, weather in June, it’s also noticeably less hectic than July and August, meaning you can wander the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, and the Topkapi Palace without the worst of the summer crowds.

For a June Europe itinerary that goes beyond the obvious, Istanbul rewards those who explore further. A day trip to the Princes’ Islands offers a tranquil escape from the city — with no cars allowed, you can cycle through pine forests and past Victorian-era buildings, and enjoy a seafood feast by the water and even get a swim in! A sunset Bosphorus cruise is an absolute must, and crossing to the Asian side — particularly the neighbourhood of Kadıköy gives you a far more local feel than the tourist-heavy historic peninsula.

9. Fethiye, Türkiye

For where is warmest in Europe in June, Fethiye on Türkiye’s turquoise coast is one of the best answers and it’s my choice of holiday destination this June!

June brings beautiful temperatures with an average high of 29°C, and the region is often referred to as the garden of Türkiye, with winter rains turning the surrounding landscape into a lush green oasis.

The region packs in an extraordinary amount to see and do and is the perfect family friendly beach destination in June. The Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz is one of the most iconic beaches in the Mediterranean. Fethiye is also the starting point of the Lycian Way, and hiking sections of this trail in June is a rewarding way to explore the coast, with warm, dry weather that’s still manageable in the early morning or late afternoon.

10. Ring Road, Iceland

After visiting Iceland in early June the other year I highly recommend it as one of the top places to go in June in Europe! You don’t go here for a hot holiday, you go for adventure and it makes for a great trip as part of the kids June school holiday, long weekend or hiking trip in June!

If Iceland is on your bucket list to visit but you aren’t a fan of the ‘Ice’, June, at the start of the summer months is ideal because the island is warming up and the rain is less, and you should get zero snow but you never know with the weather in Iceland!

Travelling Iceland’s famous ring road all around the island is a great trip to do visiting the famous waterfalls of Seljalandsfossand Skógafoss. The impressive Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, as well as, Vatnajökull National Park, and the Mývatn geothermal area. One of the big bonus’ is that the hiking areas that have been closed all Autumn, Winter and Spring, are opening up in June!

11. Bergen, Norway

For one of the most breathtaking and best European destinations in June, Bergen in Norway is hard to top — and the fjords are the reason most people make the journey! May and June offer the driest weather in Bergen the days are extraordinarily long thanks to Norway’s near-midnight sun, and the surrounding landscape is at its most vivid green!

The fjords themselves are staggering. The Sognefjord — nicknamed the King of Fjords — is the longest in Norway and the second longest in the world. In May and June you can also see the fruit trees blossoming along the Hardangerfjord — a beautiful and unique experience.

The classic Norway in a Nutshell route combines a scenic train journey, the famous Flåm Railway, and a fjord cruise into one spectacular day trip, and is one of the finest ways to experience Europe travel in June anywhere on the continent.

12. Helsinki, Finland

For where to go on a city break in Europe in June? Helsinki is a great answer! This is a city that genuinely surprises people. It’s effortlessly cool, design-obsessed, and surrounded by water. Summer arrives late in Finland’s capital, but when it does, the whole city seems to exhale — by June the light barely leaves, evenings stretch long and golden, and terraces fill up across the city.

It’s one of the best examples of best weather in Europe in June for those who prefer long luminous days over scorching heat, and the city never feels overcrowded in the way that more obvious summer holiday in Europe destinations can.

The UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna Sea Fortress is a must — reached by a short ferry ride, you can spend a day exploring its historic buildings and enjoying panoramic views of the Helsinki skyline and archipelago. A traditional Finnish sauna followed by a plunge into the Baltic Sea is a non-negotiable experience, and the vibrant Kauppatori market is the perfect spot to graze on fresh strawberries and grilled salmon on a bright June afternoon. For a brilliant June Europe itinerary addition, Tallinn is just two hours away by ferry — an easy day trip to the Estonian capital that effectively lets you visit two countries in one trip

13. Devon & Cornwall, U.K

I can’t write a list of the best places to visit in Europe in June without forgetting about the United Kingdom! June is truly the best month to explore the UK I think because the weather is often good (although not guaranteed) but it’s not the sticky heat that comes in August.

A few years ago I spent a wonderful few days exploring Devon and Cornwall in England’s South West corner. This area is very popular for domestic tourists and because of it’s small country lanes, roads get busy and blocked come July and August when the UK schools break up so June is the ideal time to visit!

Visit beaches and cute seaside towns, hike along the coast. Explore historic castles and towns and indulge in a Cornish pastry or two!

14. Scottish Highlands, U.K

Don’t forget about Scotland because it is a true gem in June!, June is officially the sunniest month of the year in the Highlands, the daylight hours are extraordinary — it stays light until 11pm and is barely dark even at 1am — and crucially, the notorious Highland midges are not yet out in full force as they are later in the summer making it one of the smartest times for Europe travel in June if Scotland is on your radar.

The landscapes alone justify the trip. The Isle of SkyeGlencoe, and Loch Ness are the iconic highlights, but the Highlands rewards those who venture further — into Glen Affric, often called Scotland’s most beautiful glen, or along the dramatic North Coast 500 road trip route, one of the finest Europe road trip ideas for June anywhere on the continent. Although pack layers and expect the weather to change without warning, and prepare to be completely awestruck.

15. Athens, Greece

Athens in June is one of the best European destinations in June for travellers who want a world-class city paired with easy access to the sea. June sits just on the edge of the high tourist season.

The city itself delivers the Acropolis, incredible food, and vibrant nightlife, but what makes Athens truly special for where to go in Europe in June is how effortlessly you can escape to the islands straight from the port of Piraeus, just a short metro ride from the city centre.

The Saronic Gulf islands are the jewel in Athens’ crown for day trips. Aegina is the closest, reachable in just 40 minutes from Piraeus, and boasts one of the most complete ancient temples in Greece alongside lovely beaches. Hydra — car-free, elegant, and draped in bougainvillea — is an hour away and feels like stepping into another era entirely, while little Agistri offers pine-fringed beaches and a laid-back atmosphere with almost no tourist infrastructure.

Athens is a great city break and base for the Greek Islands for your Europe June holiday!

16. Crete, Greece

Crete is one of the best European islands to visit in June — and arguably June is the finest month to visit Greece’s largest island. You get true summer weather and water warm enough for swimming, but avoid the peak crowds of July and August.

Popular spots like Balos and Elafonisi are still slightly less frantic, and the island still feels like it has some breathing room before the mid-summer rush. The first half of June in particular is considered one of the most beautiful times to visit, when the landscape is still green and you can explore the stunning Venetian harbours of Chania and Rethymno without fighting through crowds.

The beaches alone make Crete worth the trip. Elafonisi, with its famous pink-tinged sand and turquoise lagoon, and Balos, reached by boat or a dramatic clifftop drive, are among the most breathtaking in the Mediterranean. Away from the sand, the Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe, is fully open in June and offers one of the great hiking experiences on the continent. Be sure to rent a car to see the best of Crete!

17. Lisbon, Portugal

For a top choice of city breaks in June in Europe, June brings Lisbon into full summer glory — warm enough for nearby beach trips without the punishing heat that grips the city in July and August, and it delivers something truly special: the Festas dos Santos Populares, when the historic neighbourhoods transform into one vast street party.

The jacaranda trees are also in bloom in June, turning Lisbon’s plazas and streets a beautiful purple — one of the best spots to enjoy them is Largo do Carmo with a coffee in hand.

Beyond the city, Lisbon’s location makes it a brilliant base. The beaches are just a short train ride away — Cascais is the best beach resort on the Lisbon coastline while the fairytale palaces of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are only 40 minutes from the city centre and best visited in June before the summer queues build.

18. Madeira, Portugal

Thanks to its location which is actually closer to Morocco than Portugal, Madeira is one of those best European destinations in June that genuinely earns its nickname — the Island of Eternal Spring. The weather is warm, sunny, and comfortable, ideal for being outdoors all day — warm enough for swimming, hiking, and diving, but not as hot or humid as peak summer.

The island delivers an extraordinary range of experiences in a compact space. The famous levada walks — trails running alongside Madeira’s ancient irrigation canals through lush laurel forest — are at their very best in June, when the ravines and gorges are still full from winter rains and the waterfalls are at their most impressive.

The dramatic viewpoint at Pico do Arieiro, the volcanic sea pools at Porto Moniz, and the colourful capital Funchal with its cable car and botanical gardens all reward exploration. And every Saturday night in June, spectacular fireworks light up Funchal’s harbour as part of the Atlantic Festival — one of the most epic firework displays you are likely to ever see.

19. Kazanlak (Rose Valley), Bulgaria

One of the most unique places to visit in Europe in June is Kazanlak in Bulgaria’s Rose Valley. The region produces around 70% of the world’s rose oil, and every first weekend of June the town hosts the famous Rose Festival — a programme rich in concerts, bazaars, fireworks, wine tasting, rose-picking rituals, and parades that has been running since 1903.

The blooming season runs from late May to mid-June, when the Rosa Damascena — a variety with an extraordinarily high oil concentration — fills the vast rose fields with an intoxicating scent that spreads across the entire valley. It is one of the most distinctive places to visit in June anywhere on the continent, and still genuinely off the radar for most Western European travellers.

The experience goes well beyond the flowers themselves. Early morning rose-picking rituals take place in nearby villages like Enina and Kran, where locals in traditional costume harvest dew-drenched petals accompanied by folklore music — arriving by 9am is essential to catch the roses at peak freshness before the dew evaporates.

As one of the most genuinely cheap places to visit in Europe in June, Bulgaria offers extraordinary value, making the Rose Valley an effortless add-on to a wider Balkans itinerary taking in Sofia, Plovdiv, or beyond.

20. Basel, Switzerland

I vividly remember going to Basel in Christmas and being told by my guide that come summer, people use the river Rhine to swim home from work with their stuff in a watertight bag and it’s been on my list to visit in summer ever since so it had to make this list of where to go in Europe in June!

Not only this but Basel in Switzerland transforms every summer into the global capital of contemporary art. Art Basel runs for a few days mid June bringing together over 200 leading galleries and more than 4,000 artists from five continents — making it one of Europe’s most exciting cultural weeks of the year.

Beyond the art world spectacle, Basel is a genuinely beautiful city. The medieval old town, the Rhine river and promenade , and some of the finest museum collections in Europe. A word of practical advice for Basel in June though: accommodation books up fast during Art Basel week, with prices typically rising by 30–50%, so booking well in advance is essential.

21. Innsbruck, Austria

For a city break with a difference in June, Innsbruck is one of the most dramatically situated cities in Europe — a compact, beautifully preserved Alpine capital with the Nordkette mountains rising almost vertically from the city’s edge, and June is one of the finest months to visit.

The best time to visit runs from mid-May to mid-September, and June brings warm, long days averaging around 24°C with nearly 16 hours of daylight making it perfect for combining the city’s stunning medieval Old Town and time outdoors. The Nordkettenbahn cable car, departing from the city centre, whisks you up to 2,334 metres for panoramic Alpine views — on a clear June morning, it is one of the great views in Central Europe.

June also marks the start of Innsbruck’s vibrant cultural season. Innsbruck international dance festival has been bringing the world’s premier dance companies to Innsbruck since 1992, running from the last week of June into mid-July, with performances ranging from contemporary to ballet alongside open workshops.

22. Efteling, Netherlands

Finally, we did a summer trip to the Netherlands last August and a highlight was Efteling Theme Park however it was extremely hot in August so in June it would be ideal, and far less busy too!

People say Efteling Theme Park is better than Disneyland, and much cheaper. This fantasy-themed park is inspired by myths, legends, fairytales, fables, and folklore, and is the largest theme park in the Netherlands. The second half of June is a particularly sweet spot to visit: Dutch children are still in school until July, meaning noticeably lighter crowds than the peak summer weeks, the weather sits at a comfortable 21–24°C, and flights and accommodation are cheaper than they’ll be once school holidays begin.
