October is a great month to head to Asia, the summer heat has cooled, the monsoon rain is out of the way (in most areas), and some of the continent gets to enjoy stunning Autumn, Fall colours.
Along with the October half term, October is a great month for families to travel to Asia and this post will focus on the best family places to visit in Asia in October too!
I recently did a round up of the best countries to visit in October (which you can read here). I love Asia and had so many recommendations so I had to make this into it’s own Asia in October travel guide!
🍂 Best Places to See Autumn Colours in Asia
One of the biggest misconceptions is that Asia is always hot but this is not true! Many countries and areas in Asia get all of the seasons, including trees turning golden and temperatures cooling in October. If you want to get a feel, and look, of Autumn in Asia and see fall foliage in Asia, you’ll need to head into the mountains and higher areas of the country. I’d also recommend visiting in late October for the best colours rather than early October.
1. Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto is a popular place to visit in Japan for a reason and even more so in Autumn! The city’s hundreds of temples and shrines, start to transform from mid-October, with the famous momiji (Japanese maple) leaves shifting from green to fiery shades of amber, crimson, and gold.
Peak colour in Kyoto typically falls between late October and mid-November, so if you’re visiting in October, aim for the last week of the month for the best chance of catching the leaves at their most vivid, perfect if you are travelling for the October half term
One thing to note is that you won’t be the only one wanting to see these colours and Kyoto is known for being busy all year round so you’ll have to book accommodation and any tours well in advance. A good alternative is to stay in Osaka and day trip to Kyoto to benefit from more accommodation options.

2. Hokkaido, Japan
Hokkaido one of the best places to visit in Asia for fall colours because this is where Japan’s autumn begins because of its Northern location.
September through to mid-October is prime time, with Daisetsuzan National Park usually the first place in the country to turn, its vast volcanic landscapes blazing red and orange from as early as mid-September. Lake Toya, Shikotsu-Toya National Park, and the rolling hills around Biei and Furano are equally stunning, offering a completely different side of Japan to the temple-and-city circuit further south.
Hokkaido is also perfect if you have visited the famous spots of Japan before and now want to see areas of the Japanese countryside not many visitors get to and the best way to explore this is by renting a car!
3. Seoraksan National Park, South Korea
South Korea is one of the best countries to visit in October with all of its destinations showcasing great weather for exploring, but to see the best of Autumn in South Korea, Seoraksan National Park located in the northeast of South Korea makes one of the best places to visit in Asia in October because of its granite peaks, rushing waterfalls, and dense forest that turns a beautiful golden colour.
Late September to mid-October marks peak colour here, and the hiking trails that the park is known for cater to every level. The nearest town, Sokcho, is a great base because it’s well connected to Seoul by bus (around 2.5 hours) and packed with excellent seafood restaurants along the waterfront.
One tip — go on a weekday if you can. Koreans know exactly how beautiful this park is in autumn, and weekends fill up fast.

4. Zhangjiajie, China
Have you heard of the Avatar mountains in China? They are all over YouTube right now with visitors feeling like they are in Avatar and in late October and November, these Avatar like pillars are wrapped in a blaze of autumn colour that makes the whole landscape feel otherworldly.
Visiting China in October is a good idea because of the great weather the country offers but for somewhere impressive and far less visited by Western travellers, Zhangjiajie is one of the most rewarding autumn discoveries in Asia.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain are the two headline attractions, but allow at least three days — the park is vast and rushing it would be a mistake. One important note: avoid the first week of October entirely, as China’s Golden Week national holiday sees the park overwhelmed with domestic tourists so plan this into your autumn in Asia itinerary.
5. Sapa, Vietnam
Does South East Asia get Autumn colours? Yes, if you go up high! And Sapa in Northern Vietnam is one of the best spots in Asia to visit in October for Autumn colours, and a cool temperature!
September and October transform the terraced rice fields into a breathtaking sea of gold with Fansipan, Vietnam’s highest peak, looming above the clouds. For sheer natural scenery, it’s hard to beat, and it sits firmly among the most stunning autumn destinations in Asia.
Early to mid-October is the window to aim for, when the terraces are at their most golden before the harvest is cut. The town of Sapa itself has grown considerably in recent years, so if you want a quieter experience, base yourself in one of the surrounding villages like Ta Van or Lao Chai instead. Book accommodation early and don’t miss trekking between villages with a local guide.
6. Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan
Taiwan is another one of the best countries to visit in Asia in October as a whole but to tempt you even more and to enable you to see autumn colours on this small island, I’d recommend visiting Sun Moon Lake.
I spent a few weeks travelling all of Taiwan and Sun Moon Lake was one of my favourite spots. Nestled in the mountains of central Taiwan, this stunning alpine lake transforms into something truly magical come autumn. It’s one of the most photogenic autumn destinations in Asia, and one that far too few Western travellers have on their radar.. which is why you should go!
November is the sweet spot for a visit, though late October already brings cooler temperatures and the first hints of colour to the hillsides. The lake is best explored by bicycle. Hire one from the main town of Shuishe and follow the lakeside cycle path at your own pace and combine it with a trip to nearby Alishan National Scenic Area, where the mountain forests put on their own vivid autumn display.

7. Hunza Valley, Pakistan
Visiting Pakistan in October is a really good idea and I know this because I ran a women’s group tour to Pakistan the other year and specifically picked October to go because of the great weather! For Autumn colours in Pakistan, head to the Hunza Valley it does autumn on a scale that rivals anywhere in Asia! Tucked deep in the Karakoram
I visited around 10th October and I’ll admit, it was a bit too early, late October is best for widespread Autumn colour across the valley. Poplar trees turning to pillars of gold, apricot orchards shifting to rust and amber, all set against a backdrop of snow-dusted peaks topping 7,000 metres. The turquoise ribbon of the Hunza River threading through the valley below completes a scene that feels like a painting.
Karimabad is the main hub and a good base with Altit and Baltit Forts worth exploring, and the drive up to Passu and Gulmit offers some of the most dramatic scenery in the region. There are fewer tourists than you’d expect for somewhere this spectacular, and a warmth of welcome that makes Pakistan in October one of the most genuinely rewarding travel experiences in Asia.

8. Bukhara, Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is one of the countries to visit now because it’s well and truly open and set up for tourism but not over visited! I went the other spring and one thing I can confirm is that you don’t want to visit here in summer because of the heat, therefore Uzbekistan in Autumn is a great choice!
Uzbekistan and the ancient city of Bukhara in particular has sunny days sitting comfortably around 20-25°C and cool, crisp evenings perfect for lingering over tea in one of the old town’s courtyard cafés in October. The Silk Road architecture that makes this city so extraordinary will have a soft golden glow of autumn with the bazaars overflowing with late harvest produce like pomegranates, figs, dried apricots.
For anyone building an Uzbekistan in October itinerary, pairing Bukhara with nearby Samarkand (just over an hour away by high-speed train), and the capital city Tashkent is a good choice to see some of the best of Central Asia is an underrated city and time of the year!

9. Big Almaty Lake, Kazakstan
Another one of the best places to visit in October in Central Asia is Big Almaty Lake! Sitting at 2,500 metres above sea level and just 15 kilometres from the city of Almaty, this is one of Central Asia’s most striking natural spectacles and even more spectacular in October.
The lake’s famously surreal turquoise water, framed by hillsides blazing gold and red, creates a combination of colour that feels almost unreal. At 10-15°C with clear mountain air, Kazakhstan in October offers some of the most rewarding hiking conditions anywhere in Asia.
The three-hour hike up is straightforward but come prepared — no shops or shelters exist beyond the entrance gate, layers are essential, and the turquoise colour shows best in direct sunlight so an early start pays off. For travellers seeking good weather in Asia in October alongside landscapes completely off the standard tourist trail, Big Almaty Lake is a great off the beaten path option!
10. Tbilisi, Georgia
On the cusp of Asia and Europe is Georgia so if you are looking for places to visit in Asia in October that are not too far away, Georgia is a great option and Tbilisi is easy to fly into!
I went here in spring and it’s been on my Autumn radar ever since because I can only imagine how nice this city perched on hills above a river will be full of Autumn colours and thanks to it’s location, Autumn does arrive here in Tbilisi in October!
Spend your days in the bath houses that are all around the city, the many parks, cafes and restaurants. This is an ideal city break in Asia in October! But you can also explore more of the country quite easily here by renting a car or hiring a guide. A day trip to Kazbegi is a must! In October, the drive up the Georgian Military Highway through the Caucasus mountains, with autumn forests flanking the road and snow-capped peaks above, is breathtaking.

For places in Asia with good weather in October where you can relax on the beach, enjoy island life and have a ‘summer holiday’ in October, here are the top places to visit in Asia in October for beach weather!
11. Gili Islands & Lombok, Indonesia
October is one of the sweetest months to visit Lombok. Sitting just east of Bali, this beautiful Indonesian island enjoys the tail end of its dry season through October, with long sunny days, low humidity, and the kind of clear turquoise water that makes every beach photo look edited.
Temperatures hover around 27-30°C — warm enough for the beach without the oppressive heat of peak summer, and rainfall is minimal, particularly in the first half of the month. When searching for the best beach destinations in Asia in October, Lombok delivers everything Bali does with a fraction of the crowds.
Part of Lombok are The Gili Islands, which are also great this time of year. Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno each offer their own flavour — lively, laid-back, and secluded respectively with excellent snorkelling, no motorised vehicles and sea turtles practically guaranteed in the water. Indonesia in October is a great choice and Lombok and the Gili Islands mix holiday with adventure!

12. Komodo Islands, Indonesia
The Komodo Islands is a bucket list destination and October is prime time for visiting this part of Indonesia. Located in the Lesser Sunda Islands of eastern Indonesia, this remote UNESCO World Heritage Site enjoys some of its calmest, clearest conditions of the entire year through October with calm seas, visibility underwater, and the dramatic landscape of volcanic hills, pink sand beaches, and turquoise bays. For those in search of the best islands to visit in Asia in October, Komodo sits in a league of its own.
The diving and snorkelling here is genuinely world-class and the Komodo dragons themselves, the world’s largest living lizards, are an extraordinary sight on guided walks through Komodo and Rinca islands. Boat trips between the islands are the best way to explore, and October’s calm seas make island-hopping easy and comfortable. If you are looking for an October half term trip to Asia with kids.. it doesn’t get better than this for an adventure! It’s on my list for my family for sure!
13. Perhentian Islands, Malaysia
The Perhentian Islands are honestly one of the best islands to visit in South East Asia and foreign tourists completely miss them which is why I recommend to go, I had an amazing week of island paradise here the other year.
Another reason I recommend them as one of the best places to visit in South East Asia in October is because they are only open for tourism from March to November due to the weather, so October is the last month you can visit with good weather conditions.
Consisting of the ‘big perhentian island’ and the ‘small perhentian island’ with the big island offering more hotels and built up tourism facilities and the small island offering a more laid back approach, these are mostly visited by domestic tourists but the beaches, snorkelling, diving and general adventure activities should not be missed! This is a trip you will not forget! Especially if you’re looking for a trip to Asia for the October half term!

14. Koh Lanta, Thailand
I’ve been to Thailand many times and one of my all time favourite places is the island of Koh Lanta! Thailand in October is a good idea but you have to go to the right region, which in October is the South western region of Krabi (and Phuket), with the neighbouring islands of Koh Lanta and Koh PhiPhi.
October is the start of the dry season in this area so the start of October can still be quite wet, therefore I’d recommend visiting Koh Lanta in late October for clear beach days. The best thing about this island is how chill it is and all of the day trips you can do to neighbouring islands. Visiting Thailand in October puts you ahead of the crowds that descend from November onwards, with lower prices and a far more relaxed pace all round.

15. Maldives
Sitting in the transition between the wet and dry seasons, the Maldives in October sees rainfall decreasing week by week, temperatures holding steady in the high 20s to low 30s, and resort prices lower than the peak season which begins in November.
For the best weather in the Maldives in October, the northern atolls are the safest bet, with Baa Atoll offering something genuinely extraordinary – Hanifaru Bay! This is one of the world’s premier spots for whale sharks and manta rays, and October falls within peak season for both.
Book a resort on a private island here and you’ll have pristine water, exceptional marine life, and significantly fewer fellow guests than the Christmas crowd that arrives weeks later. 16. Fethiye, Türkiye
If you are looking for an all inclusive holiday in October, especially for the October half term with the kids, you don’t need to go that far out of Europe because Turkey’s Turquoise Coast is close to perfect then.
Temperatures on the Aegean and Mediterranean coastline sit at a very comfortable 25-27°C, perfect for swimming in the pool and in the sea still but you can feel that Autumn is approaching. Fethiye and the surrounding area, like the the famous Ölüdeniz lagoon and the ghost village of Kayaköy are great to visit at this time of year, making this one of the most rewarding coastal destinations in Asia in October for those who want culture alongside their beach time.

For more Autumn travel in Asia where you aren’t going specifically for Autumn colours but for that perfect transitional weather between the summer heat and winter cold. Here is a list of places to explore in Asia in October when they are at their best and have local festivals happening.
17. Takayama, Japan
Takayama is high on my list of my favourite places in Japan because although it is a popular tourist spot, it’s not as busy with foreign tourists as the likes of Kyoto and Nara. Temperatures sit at a crisp 15-18°C, the surrounding mountains are beginning to turn gold, and the morning markets overflow.
Takayama’s cobbled Sanmachi Suji district and Hida Beef restaurants are reason enough to visit, and the nearby UNESCO-listed village of Shirakawa-go with its dramatic thatched-roof farmhouses framed by autumn foliage makes for an unmissable day trip . For anyone building a Japan in October itinerary, Takayama sits at the top of the list
This beautifully preserved Edo-period merchant town in the Japanese Alps is extraordinary at any time of year, but on the 9th and 10th of October it reaches another level entirely because of the Takayama Autumn Festival, one of Japan’s three greatest, fills the ancient streets with elaborately carved floats, traditional music, and lantern-lit parade. Accommodation books out months in advance around the festival, so planning ahead is essential if you want to travel then.

18. Chiang Mai, Thailand
You may think of Thailand and think of beaches and island life but Chiang Mai in the North is one of the best cities to visit in South East Asia in October and it has plenty to offer, especially for families and kids.
Chiang Mai in October is has a great combinations of good weather, culture, and value. The monsoon is winding down fast and by mid-October rainfall drops significantly, humidity ease making it easier to expolore and the surrounding countryside turns a lush, vivid green that makes the city’s temples, rice paddies, and mountain scenery look spectacular.
The city’s cultural offer is exceptional, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the Old City’s moated temples, and the vibrant Night Bazaar are all best enjoyed without the high-season crowds that arrive from November. October is also the month of the Yi Peng Lantern Festival, when thousands of paper lanterns are released into the night sky in one of the most magical spectacles in Southeast Asia which worth planning an entire trip around. You can also visit ethical Elephant sanctuaries, go hiking in the jungle, zip lining and so many more adventures when in Chiang Mai! When searching for the best cities to visit in Asia in October, Chiang Mai consistently delivers.

19. Bhutan
Have you thought about a trip to Bhutan?? October is Bhutan’s peak month for good reason! The monsoon has cleared and temperatures in the western valleys hover at a pleasant 15-19°C. Trekking conditions are at their absolute best, with the Jomolhari and Druk Path trails offering some of the most dramatic high-altitude scenery on earth.
October is also festival season, with the Thimphu Tshechu, a celebration of masked dances, traditional music, and ancient Buddhist ritual — drawing locals from across.
One essential tip: Bhutan requires visitors to book through a licensed tour operator and pay a daily Sustainable Development Fee, so planning ahead is needed. If you are looking for the most extraordinary places to visit in Asia in October, Bhutan is worth a visit!
20. Rajasthan, India
After a very hot and humid summer, India becomes visitable again and one of the best areas to visit in Rajasthan with i’s ancient wonders and cities. Don’t get me wrong, it will still be very hot in India in October and I speak from experience, but that summer humidity isn’t there and also, Rajasthan gets cold in winter so it’s the ideal spot between the two seasons!
The three most popular cities in this state – Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur makes the natural itinerary for this trip, Jaipur’s Amber Fort, Jodhpur’s towering Mehrangarh fortress, and Udaipur’s dreamy Lake Palace are great to visit. Push further west to Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert opens up magnificently, with camel safaris and desert camps under staggering starlit skies a genuine highlight.
October also brings one of Rajasthan’s best festivals, the Marwar Festival in Jodhpur. Book accommodation well ahead for both.

21. Annapurna / Everest Base Camp, Nepal
For hiking destinations in Asia in October, October is the single best month to trek in Nepal, and both the Annapurna Circuit and Everest Base Camp trails are at their absolute finest. The monsoon has packed up entirely leaving clear skies to see the mountains and temperatures at lower altitudes sit at a comfortable 12-20°C. Trekking in Nepal in October is a great idea.
Both routes are spectacular but offer different experiences — Everest Base Camp delivers the iconic Khumbu Icefall and the overwhelming scale of the world’s highest peak, while the Annapurna Circuit takes in a greater variety of landscapes, from subtropical valleys to high alpine passes. October coincides with Nepal’s Dashain and Tihar festivals, adding a cultural dimension to the trail experience.
When visiting Nepal in October, it’s important to note that guides and teahouse accommodation fills up fast so book ahead.
22. Beijing, China
For a great city destination in Asia in October, Beijing provides! The oppressive summer heat and humidity have gone, replaced by crisp, clear days sitting comfortably around 15-20°C which is the most pleasant weather the city sees all year. The air quality improves making it ideal to explore the city. The Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace are attractions you can see.
If the Great Wall of China is on your bucket list, October is a beautiful time to visit and Beijing is a great base to see more of China in October from with high speed railways getting you around the country in just a few hours.
One important timing note: avoid the first week of October entirely, as China’s Golden Week holiday sees every major attraction overwhelmed with domestic tourists.

23. Cappadocia, Türkiye
I’ll end with the place I have personally visited the most in October which is the magical, fairytale region of Cappadocia in Türkiye. The weather in Cappadocia in October is ideal because the summer heat has gone but it’s still hot and warm before winter sets in.
Not only can you enjoy the hot air balloons in October but it’s a great time for hiking in between all of the fairy chimneys, horse riding, hiring an ATV and visiting the museums showcasing how society developed in this region.
There’s a reason Cappadocia is all over instagram and paired with a city break to Istanbul if you can do it, Cappadocia is easily one of the best places to visit in Asia in October for activities and adventure!
